About Bourbon Red Turkeys
A heritage turkey with a great personality. A joy to have around
Being a heritage turkey these turkeys are not as large as the meat varieties. The toms (male) grow to be approximately 23 pounds while the hens only 14 pounds. These birds are active foragers and in general curious birds.
They are friendly once they know you and will often run up to you for a greeting. They typically however will still keep a standoff distance since they are not so friendly as to want pets.
The Bourbon Red used to be a popular commercial meat bird until the 1950s when the commercial industry adopted the fast growing Broad Breasted White turkeys that now dominate the supermarket.
